Aussies developed BMW with a bed
Why not? In Australia, Ford sells the F6 Tornado, Pursuit and Super Pursuit under the Ford Performance Vehicle (FPV) banner, hauling ass as well as anything else. BMW doesn't offer anything even close, so what is a Bimmer enthusiast to do when he has to stop at The Home Depot for garden supplies? Certainly not put them in the X5!
There is always someone out there who solves problems such as this before they actually become an issue. In this case, a bloke named POWERCHIP from the M5Board has taken a BMW E39 M5 and is converting it into what he calls the M5 UTE. It seems that after talking to Shane from Southern Rod and Custom in New South Wales Australia it looked like his dream car might just come true.
The yearlong transformation of this great sedan into the M5 UTE is truly amazing. Every inch of the vehicle is being properly engineered to drive just like the M5 from which it spawned. Click here to check out the 200+ photo album that details the build every step of the way.

Cool project. I don't really care for the BMW Uber-Yuppie brand, but, the project is cool. It's the only BMW I wouldn't mind owning.

It actually looks pretty good, but anything looks good with large wheels like that. And the bed is quite long so I'm sure it's much more functional than a BMW wagon or even an X5 for that matter.

I don't see myself owning any pickup that can't haul full sheet goods (because my current BMW wagon will haul 10ft pipe with all glass closed), but this is pretty cool. BMW built a pickup out of a E30 M3 ages ago, so it's not exactly the first 'M Truck.'
Looking at the drawings, I can't help but think instead of just a little roundel, there should be a bigass ///M on the tailgate, a'la 80s pickups.

Upscale Euro brands across the board were considering luxury pickups a la Mark LT. The gas spikes of 2005-06 killed those plans.

I seem to recall in an old issue of Car and Driver a picture of an older 5-series BMW (the front half, anyway) grafted onto the rear half of a tow truck. It was just weird enough to be cool. C/D described it as "centaur-like." Obviously not a slick an execution as this.
Damn...wish I had saved that issue.

Just a note to say that the E39 will go down in history as one of the best cars ever made. The future is pointed in the direction of technology, and rightly so; but these cars are such an amazing, intuitive experience to drive that will never be duplicated ... the general public would rather put their $ in gadgets. I've thought about starting a business of rebuilding e39's to sell; I don't think it would be cost effective though. (sigh) when they're gone, they're gone.
