First Ford Shelby GT rolls off the line headed to Barrett-Jackson
We just told you about how "Hot Wheels" Amy Boylan has managed to turn Shelby Auto around, and here is one of the fruits of her labor: The first production 2007 Ford Shelby GT. As we told you a while ago, the Ford Shelby GT is essentially the consumer version of the rental-fleet-only Shelby GT-H. It will be the third Mustang in the Shelby Mustang family along with the Hertz edition and the 500-horsepower Ford Shelby GT500. And this newest Shelby 'Stang is set to follow in their footsteps.
This first GT, CSM No. 07SGT0001 will follow its big brother GT500, by crossing the block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Event on Saturday, January 20th. Just like the GT500, all the proceeds will go to the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. In case you don't remember, that first GT500 sold for $600,000 back in January. And the first Shelby GT-H sold to the public brought a whopping $250,000 back in late July. Even the fleet Shelby GT-Hs coming off Hertz lots are bringing $68,000-$90,000 at auction! So we can only imagine that this one will bring considerably more than its MSRP of $36,970.

Why? A plastic Ford with an adapted truck engine for that much money when so many better options are available? Porsche 911 Turbo anyone? BMW M5 6-speed? Mazerati Coupe? Even a damn Z06.

Responses like Ben's always make me think back to Gone in 60 seconds, Nicholas Cage version.
It was a kinda lame movie ofcourse, Lambos, Ferraris, Porsche 911's, blah blah blah, boring, but when He turned that corner and that old Shelby Mustang entered the Scene the movie lit up like a top fueler warming it's tires as Pam Anderson gets ready to drop the flag. It became something more, much more. Completely scene stealer.
911, M5, Maserati, eh? eh? eh? Nice cars (Great Even in the 911's case anyway) to be sure, but Shelby's mean something to alot of people that those never will. It's just a fact for so many.
That, and I'm sure the speculators think these things will be worth something in 30 years.

the shelby gt is a mustang gt with the ford racing power pack, exhaust and suspension.
the rest of it (stripes, stiching on the interior) is all crap i dont want or need.
this should be a $27k car.

Wow - you guys who think that this car isn't worth more than MSRP are realling missing out on the entire collector car scene. Fact is; these cars are not in mass production and the fact that they are the predicessor of a great American muscle car makes them instantly collectable. Compare these cars to the release of the original muscle cars back in the 60s. You say the "stripes, stiching, and interior is crap". Does that mean that the orignial Shelby was just a stripped and stiched out mustang fastback GT? I think not.

The original GT350 was a stripped-down two-seat coupe built for the track. Not only that, it had a manual tranny. This car is heavy, has some gloss, has an auto tranny, and no racing pedigree.
And the word is "predecessor." The car is not a predecessor, it is a "successor." A predecessor means something that has come before.
All show and no go.

#3 John...I totally agree. The movie was so-so but that whole last chase with the GT500 makes my heart pound. There are times when I just wanna get in my car (or a GT500) and drive like a bat out of hell...good times!
Yeah, they should offer a manual with this or at least a no cost manual option or make the auto cost something... The GT350s came with an optional automatic back in the day. I believe the GT500s did, too.
But these are good cars. A lot of people underestimate their potential. I just wish Ford had done a better job on the interior. I also have to agree, the price is a little high but a stock Mustang GT can easily get up around that price range...thats if you check every box. But even still, the Mustang is a lot of car for the money (no pun intended).

how does criticism of this new car in anyway reflect on the originals? personaly i believe the original gt350 to be one of the best cars ever made. why should i be willing to pay more for this one?

It's my understanding that the Shelby GT will be available with either auto or stick. The GT-H was only available with auto; just like the originals ( all of this is from memory; maybe a handful of Hertz cars with a stick hit the road? )
As for the "value" of paying over sticker for a car like this when you could replicate most of the important performance features through the Ford parts book...I guess you'd just have to look at the values of bone stock Mustangs and Shelby's from the 60's vs. cars that have been modified; there's only a handful of examples where the modified cars have commanded prices of the Shelby originals...
So in the end, It's like the disclaimer about the brown acid at Woodstock: You've been warned; but it's your trip.

Wow.
The seemingly endless quantity of ignorance displayed here makes me question my gearheadedness.
1) Paying any price for any vehicle obviously only applies to those who actually like said vehicle.
2) The people who buy at Barret-Jackson are indeed rich but they certainly aren't stupid. Remember, they HAVE the money and you don't. Seems they can spend it any way their heart desires.
3) The new Mustang has captured the imagination of the American motoring public for the first time since the original. Nothing wrong with that.
4) There are many models to pick from, even the lowly V6's, same as the originals.
5) Don't get your panties in a bunch over what people are paying for cars....either get a better job or buy the one you can afford.

OK, I have read enough... take a deep breath and exhale now, and please read and think. Thank God we live in a country that promotes the freedoms of sales, marketing and supply and demand by our choice. I bought a 2007 GTCS Convertable for my wife last month, we are in our mid fortys and well achieved middle class Americans. I loved her car so much the first month it took twenty years off my age (four kids later) but it lacked the bone chilling excitment of going through the gears (hers is an automatic). This GT model is tight, solid, and stock 300HP for 30K, a great car, Ford did it right. When I learned about the New Shelby GT, 325HP, suspension, Hurst 5 speed and touched by Carroll Shelby's trained professionals in his plant, something not been done since 1967,(if my history is accurate) I bought one for myself to someday leave to some trusted family member when I am too old to clutch and shift. This successor Shelby GT is now and will be a special piece of the new emerging muscle car market. Remember how many idiots stripped down, and ran into the ground Hemi-Cudas, treating them like an old pair of shoes, look at what survived.
Carroll Shelby, and his name brand created the current demand for the American Muscle of the 60's and 70's. He was the visionary for his market and passion just like George Lucas (Star Wars) and Donald Trump (Real Estate). Isn't America great, if you have a dream and and a passion that you can fulfill for yourself its one thing but when you can enrich others lives and bring happiness to them, thats what this great county is about. I am paying 3K over invoice to get my Shelby GT in a few weeks, the sales rep will get a cut that will help his family, the dealership sells another unit, and their service with this deal will have me go back to them again and again, which means more money to support all their employees. And when I get stressed at home or on the job, I can go run through the gears for a few miles to cool off which will probably keep me from needing a heart bypass when I'm 60. The 3K is already well spent money. In closing, Carroll Shelby is 83 now, I hope his health stays with him to do another hands on project like this GT 300 and the Cobra 500. We tend to not fully appreciate these great Americans and what their visions and dreams have done to help shape part of our societys culture until their no longer with us. Man that is an awesome write up and is exactly why I bought my Shelby GT. I have dreamed of buying or owning a real Shelby that his mechanics actually did all the hands own additions. It is a dream come true and my 3 year old son really appreciates this ride. I plan on leaving him this car when it is my time to pass to carry the Shelby legendary tradition on. Great car, great fun to drive and man does it turn heads, thanks Mr. Shelby!
